Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at 12:50PM The body is the visible soul, and the soul is the invisible body. The body and soul are not divined anywhere, they are parts of each other, they are parts of one whole. You have to accept the body, you have to love the body, you have to respect the body, you have to be grateful to your body...
The body is the most complex mechanism in existence-it is simply marvelous!
And blessed are those who marvel.
Begin the feeling of wonder with your own body, because that is the closest to you.
The closest nature has approached to you, the closest existence has come to you, is through the body. In your body is the water of the oceans, in your body is the fire of the stars and the suns, in your body is the air, your body is made of earth. Your body represents the whole of existence, all the elements. And what a transformation! What a metamorphosis! Look at the earth, and then look at your body, what a transformation, and you have never marveled about it! Dust has become divine- what greater mystery is possible? What greater miracles are you waiting for? And you see the miracle happening every day. Out of the mud comes the lotus...and out of the dust has arisen our beautiful body.
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at 12:54PM As a mother's body changes, her exercise should allow space for this physical shift. As new life grows within, the body is constantly evolving to accommodate for this development. Movement can ease this transition and Gyrotonic® offers a suportive way to keep moving throughout pregnancy and gain strength during the postnatal period.
Gyrotonic® draws from several exercise modalities such as swimming, yoga, tai chi, ballet & gymnastics. It harnesses the body's physical energy with its elliptical motions, giving the spine & joints freedom within the movement. While these round motions increase flexibility, they also address spinal discomfort & joint stress. The body can be in constant motion, just as an expectant mother is in constant evolution. The movement is circular as if cycling all parts of the body.
This continuous motion is then layered with the breath. Like yoga, the breath enhances the movement and brings a meditative quality to your workout. The breath establishes a rhythm for the movement and brings the mind & body to the present. For prenatal exercise, this is a useful tool in preparation for birthing. The mind has a place to rest, and the physical body can continue in motion. There's an opportunity to focus on the cycle of the movement, similar to a vinyasa. The Gyrotonic® vocabulary becomes seamless in sequence – without end & without beginning.
As an expectant mother's center is shifting, she is able to find the necessary support with the Gyrotonic® equipment to continue exercise. This shift is felt differently throughout each trimester of her pregnancy, and the apparatus is able to accommodate for comfort, while promoting ease within her body. One modality family of Gyrotonic® is the Arch & Curl series. It is executed in the sitting position upon a bench, the legs are apart 45 degrees. It is designed to increase the flexibility of the spine, using a vocabulary of movement called the Spinal Motions. The arms extend from the body using the handle unit – which are able to rotate on a horizontal elliptical plane in both stirring-like & breast-stroke-like motions. At the same time, the spine articulates a sequenced wave, or a spinal motion similar to cat & cow – the arch & curl.
These spinal motions are fully supported by the machine and the resistence created within the body both strenghthens & increases range of motion.
The Hamstring Series is executed either lying down on the bench (postnatal) or modified sitting, reclined (prenatal). The feet are connected by a weighted pully system, creating resistence for the hamstrings, quads & inner thighs . As the inner thigh connection is greatly weakened during pregnancy, this is a wonderful opportunity to maintain strength within the adductors and abductors, supporting the weight of the belly. The position of the body combined with the pulley system relieves the joints & pelvis of weight during exercise. This weightlessness in the joints allows an increased range of motion in the hip joints, knees & ankles, while improving common circulation issues.
As a postnatal exercise, Gyrotonic® offers the new mom a steady way to gain strength during the postpartum period. The Upper Body Series & Upper Body Openings are incredible ways to improve posture and focus upon opening the shoulder & chest area. The spiraling of the spine is a great way to find freedom from the physical patterns developed in daily motions of motherhood. There are very specific exercises that promote opening the chest, offering relief from daily cradling & carrying baby.
At Marin Gyrotonic, there is opportunity to bring your new baby along to private sessions and postnatal group class, or simply reserve the moment & space for yourself. Gyrotonic® allows a new mother to find a connection with her body & mind throughout the changes of motherhood, and establishes both a restorative & energizing practice.
